The work of the later engravers, writing masters, and baroque and rococo designers follows in order. Part Three attempts to arrange the "great weedy jungle" of Victorian letters and types and concludes with twentieth-century alphabets such as the distinctive wood engraving of Edward Wadsworth. Each section has a historical introduction, and each plate has a descriptive caption.

I was forced to buy this book for school. However, I have found it to be both informative and not as boring as some other text books I have had to endure. If you are in the marketing field I recommend adding this to your shelf.

Market based management walks the reader through the basic foundations of marketing. Each chapter takes the reader through examples and explanations of these foundational principals.Although the text is clear, it feels like it is written by an accountant rather than by someone who writes for a living.This kindle version was disappointing with ye number of restrictions. Only my iPad was able to read it, and features like dictation were disabled.For the cost, rent or reselling is a better option.

This is a very pricey book for an MBA course of mine. It's got great concepts and a very quantitative method for evaluating marketing, which is great because when marketing programs are the first to get cut in the budget, it's nice to have proof of how effective they are. The author also has a compatible website with additional tools for marketing.Still, I think that the book is really dense with not enough real-world examples. Also, the graphs alluded to on one page are found on a different page, which makes it difficult to follow along (sometimes graphs are in the future, and others they have already been shown).His methods are great in theory, but a lot of them would be impossible to configure in real life. For example, when does anyone truly know the true market attractiveness score? It's an estimate, at best. Great start, though. I hope that the 6th edition is a little better organized...

This slender, realistic and powerfully dramatic tale was first published in Russia in 1861 by a writer well known in her day who has since fallen into obscurity. The title character is Lolenka, a dutiful 15-year-old schoolgirl living in the provincial city of N, who is dangerously swayed by the bitterly irreverent speeches of her neighbor, a handsome, exiled poet consigned to a numbing job as a copyist. Veretitsyn, who has been censored by the authorities as an example of a "harmful trend" in society, is throwing his life away in self-pity and derision. He is in love with a paragon of kindness and beauty, Sofya Khmelevskaya, but she won't have him. When he sees Lolenka across the fence, reciting her lessons, Veretitsyn decides to make her as miserable as he is. He cynically interrogates her about her schoolwork, pointing out how mechanically she is being taught. Susceptible Lolenka experiences doubt for the first time in her life, and, taken with Veretitsyn, she intentionally flunks her exams and refuses to marry the odious suitor chosen for her. A break in the narration brings the reader to St. Petersburg eight years later, where Lolenka, now a painter and feminist espousing the modern ways, reencounters her nemesis, whose unrequited love for Sofya has tempered his driving anger. Clearly grappling with social and cultural currents such as the supplanting of traditional values and the quality of education for women, Khvoshchinskaya (1824-1889), who published under the masculine pseudonym V. Kretovsky, fits squarely among her contemporaries Turgenev and Dostoyevski. Despite the sometimes stilted language, her characters are fallible and thus completely believable: Veretitsyn leaps off the page and his passion for Sofya is palpable. The first English translation of this little-known novella, originally published in 1861, tells the tale of Lolenka, a provincial schoolgirl, and her interactions with exiled poet Veretitsyn in the Russian countryside. Moreover, the story chronicles the education of young women in Russia during that period, and Khvoshchinskaya indicts those methods for being reactionary and insipid. The more that Lolenka is exposed to Veretitsyn, the more she begins to despise the petty bourgeois lifestyle she has known throughout her life. Veretitsyn offers reading suggestions, beginning with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Lolenka is moved, not with the love story, but with the freedom and willful abandon of the characters. Lolenka becomes engrossed in her extracurricular books and begins to fail at school, "forgetting all she has known." Her exasperated parents are concerned only with keeping up appearances and have her betrothed to a young man with a prosperous future. This was a great read. The stories, practically without exception, were superlative SF: imaginative, clever and very well written. I even feel somewhat ... saddened ... to realize that many of the stories, and one in particular (from the mid-to-late 40's), were much, much better written than a lot of the work available today: I enjoyed everything immensely, but was amazed to discover this writer of nearly 70 years ago seemed to have a much better understanding of (and abilty to utilize) basic grammar, mathematics, and rudimentary scientific principles than do many of the "modern" authors I have read. Indeed, the capacity of readers to understand what many of these wonderful authors from long ago took for granted, could easily be described as "advanced" topics and concepts for many contemporary readers. I highly recommend this to fans of SF short stories. A few of the stories you may already know, but to me, they were even better on re-reading. Altogether, it's a wonderful anthology of many standout works and I am very glad I bought it.

The SF Hall of Fame series was established to recognize quality SF writing before the era of the HUGO and NEBULA awards. What a wonderful gift to the early SF pioneers who were shamefully treated by the mainstream of creative writers. Of course, SF writers themselves changed these negative impressions by the higher literary standards achieved in the 1950s and beyond by such writers as Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Roger Zelazny, Ursala Le Quin, Joanna Russ, Frank Herbert (I'm having fun proving my point with this list, which could go on and on . . . .). This first volume is framed by two stories of a journey to Mars: "A Martian Odyssey" from 1934 (I wanted to make a movie version with Jack Nicholson as the hero) and "A Rose for Ecclesiastes" from 1963 (I wanted to make a movie version with Jack Nicholson as the hero). In those intervening 29 years SF writing matured from Stanley Weinbaum's rather primitive pulp fiction to Roger Zelazny's stunning modernist prose. The first story is just an action fantasy, with little science and the most rudimentary fiction techniques. Still it's a great read! It has action, humor, suspense and one of the great alien characters in the whole genre, the bird-like and noble-hearted Martian, named Tweel. Trust me: once you meet Tweel you will never forget it (?). The later distinction between Hard SF and Soft SF did not yet exist and I doubt it would have mattered to Weinbaum, who was not a professional writer. However, three decades later, we have a very professional, and polished writer in Roger Zelazny, who had internalized the main currents of modern literature as his references to Hart Crane, Rainer Maria Rilke, the Mahabharata, Shakespeare, Rimbaud attest. You get the point. For Zelazny, goddamit, SF is literature and occupies its own niche in world literature. His main character is a poet, an anti-hero with illusions of heroism, a scoundrel and a brilliant, imaginative individual who single-handedly saves a dying civilization from imploding. And what does he get for his efforts. Nothing, no material rewards, no recognition. In this, he resembles the existentialist anti-hero of main stream fiction in the 1960s. And Zelazny's style is breathtaking: metaphorical, lyrical, sarcastic (even sardonic), allusive, persuasive and, beneath Gallinger's tough talk, deeply moving, even empathetic. And Zelazny knew he was writing Soft SF, so he could indulge his imagination in creating his version of a SF Mars and an alien race inhabiting it. The distinction between Hard and Soft forms of SF clarified the intentions of writers so that their readers did not misinterpret the results. This volume is contains a plethora of short masterpieces which together create a vivid primer in the varieties of SF.

This is a collection of very good early science fiction. The selection is varied enough within the genre that you will find something to love here. No complaints about the quality of the writing. The readers all range from good to excellent as well. Where this collection fails is in the packaging and presentation.The disks all come in a thick plastic box that does not stay reliably latched. The disks sit loosely on a spindle inside this case, I guess there's about twenty of them. Nowhere in the package is there a table of contents showing which work is on what disk, and which chapters. They just run, one after another. About half the disks skip badly on the last chapter, they may or may not for you. As this is CD encoding rather than mp3, each story spans two or three disks. You fiddle around, sorting through a stack of loose cds, to swap out and continue the story. This is just not the way to package a collection of this kind.While I love most of these stories, the substandard packing will prevent me from buying the other two volumes.

As the words took root in my heart, I began to see that this was no ordinary volume. It wasnâ€™t written for the sweet child who prays innocently for a piece of candy after dinner. Neither was it addressed to the prideful Pharisee type who offers up prayers of gratitude that heâ€™s not like others. It wasnâ€™t even written to the one who already has a strong and faithful prayer life. No, it was written to the worn out, desperate woman whoâ€™s on the edge of the seat of despair. To the one who is about to give up. To her who is considering quitting. It was written to the defeated, the hopeless, and discouraged. It was written to me. So if thatâ€™s also youâ€¦if youâ€™ve lost your fight, forgotten your position of victory, or feel your candle is about to burn out, allow me to recommend Priscilla Shirerâ€™s Fervent. Reading it will leave you changed. Hungry for victory. Angry over the enemyâ€™s lies. Fervent in prayer.

This is a five star book. If you struggle with what to say in prayer or feel intimidated in front of others. This will give you tools to fight the enemy from a victory standpoint.

I was so excited to see a new book on prayer by Priscilla Shirer, Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer.Full confession here, I am rather the Priscilla Shirer fan. I find her books to be direct, practical and very scripture based. Having said that, this may just be my absolute favorite of all of her books. I judge how well I like a Christian book by how many little sticky flags I place on the pages. I often will quote these thoughts in my ministry (giving full credit of course). This one is covered in little purple flags!I love the organization of this book. As usual, Ms. Shirer is very organized in the way she writes. She begins with a basic coverage of prayer and specifically regaining your passion for prayer. She then covers nine specific categories she believes we should be addressing in our prayer life: our focus, our identity, our family, our past, our fears, our purity, our pressures, our hearts and our relationships.Each chapter begins with a little "If I were your enemy" thought. I loved these and have already quoted one on the Parenting Like Hannah Facebook page. It's a great way for her to frame a la C.S. Lewis how Satan must view his plans to derail us from the life God meant for us to live. The chapter is filled with her personal experiences and her insights based on scripture.One of my favorite parts of this book is that it is filled with scripture. She not only gives the citations within the book, but provides the quotes as well. This is always my pet peace about Christian books - having to flip back and forth within the book or between the book and the Bible to check out scriptures. Kudos to her for making it easy. Sometimes she adds her own thoughts after the scripture, but often she lets them stand on their own.I won't steal her thunder by quoting lots of passages. Let me just say this book is very practical, very well organized, very thought provoking and very scripture based. If you read my blog regularly, I rarely say you must absolutely own a book. I want to be respectful of your finances. I often say this book is worth reading, but to me that is very different from being a "must read". This in my opinion is one of those "must reads". It even has a tear out section in the back for prayers you can take with you wherever you go.If you want help with your prayer life, I am sure there are plenty of resources that may help you. I personally would choose to purchase this one. I really think it has the tools you need to enrich, enhance and even jump start your prayer life.A copy of this book was given to me for free in exchange for my honest review.

Priscilla has written a book on prayer that is as practical as they come. It's not a theoretical dissertation on prayer. It's a nuts and bolts "let's get on our knees and get after it" guide. Step by step coverage of ten different areas of your life: passion, focus, identity, family, past, fears, purity, pressures, hurts and relationships. She includes numerous specific scriptures for each of these ten areas. If this book doesn't motivate you in the war against the enemy of your soul I don't know what will. "Prayer is the portal that brings the power of heaven down to earth. It is kryptonite to the enemy and to all his ploys against you....His reign of terror stops here. Stops now. He might keep coming, but he won't have victory anymore."
