"Sarah Kay is a fearsomely open and generous talent. In this collection she will give you moments so intimate and beautifully rendered you will come to know them as your own. An unalloyed joy from beginning to end."--Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony Award-winning composer-lyricist of Broadway's In the Heights"Nowhere have I found such humble honesty laced with such beauty. Nowhere, such boundless grace. Sarah Kay writes with a particular and rare magic, evoking emotions we may have forgotten we possess. No Matter the Wreckage is both spare and dense, uproarious and healing. An enchanting collection, imbued with courage, wisdom, lament, and triumph."--Jeanann Verlee, Author of Racing Hummingbirds

I had the pleasure of meeting with Sarah Kay past 2 years, once in Philadelphia for Brave New Voices competition( July 2014) and recently in Chicago's first ever poetry block party(July 2016). The book is sweetness in my cup of iced chai, my morning mantra. Her poems 'Montauk' is my FAVORITE!!! Sarah Kay will her forever be my favorite contemporary poet.
This is absolutely beautiful. I'm cheap as well as a technological gal...as in, I rarely buy poetry books. (I'm more of a short story person, anyway. I think it's mostly because I write shorts. My poetry sounds like if Sarah Kay's poetry was shoved in a radioactive blender after getting bitten by eighty rabid dogs.) But I couldn't stay away from this one. Read it. Be changed. In one of my seminars, we discussed using books as a sort of status symbol. As in, do we leave certain books out in plain view to present a certain image of ourselves? I have to admit that I left this book on my coffee table even when I wasn't reading it, so people might think I was as deep, beautiful, and insightful as Sarah Kay...I don't know if it worked, but whatever.
Got it last weekend. I read the entire book from the time I woke up until noon over my coffee and bagel. Gorgeous writing. I almost never cry (dog movies and the first 15 minutes of UP), but I cried three times reading it. I'm going to do it again soon, and this time make notes in the margin. The mixture of truth, heartache and so... so much hope I found deeply moving. I was just disappointed I didn't have more of it to read! I really just can't say enough good things about this. I've never even particularly been that much of a fan of poetry, tending towards being a reader of stories, more then things like this. It was just absolutely shocking in it's beauty. I may start giving it away as gifts to the people I love.
In high school, I had a few negative experiences interpreting poetry and cast the subject aside until I saw Sarah Kay’s TED Talk from March 2011. She recited a poem, called B, about her hopes and dreams for her future daughter, that instantly brought tears to my eyes. From then on, I was hooked and had to read the rest of the author’s poetry. No Matter the Wreckage is a collection of 61 poems, all beautifully written and poignant. The author discusses her summer vacations at beaches on Long Island, her trips to India to visit her mother’s family, her father’s career as a photographer, and her experiences growing up in New York City. Her poetry is beautiful because the reader feels as though they are in the moment the author is describing; the reader can feel the emotions written on the pages. There are, also, poems describing female liberation; from gender stereotypes, from relationships that did not work, from ideas about how a woman is supposed to live. There is a sincerity and quiet feminism in the poems pertaining to the author’s encounters with men. She approaches the situations from a place of wonder and hope: this is most readily displayed in The Type. Overall, this collection is a lovely read and brings much pause for reflection. It is not the type of collection to speed read or gloss over; but, perfect for a late Spring day in the shade of an oak tree. I highly recommend this book for those who feel apprehensive towards poetry and those who want to expand their knowledge of young poets.
Sarah Kay's poetry is vivid and succinct. She doesn't waste words; putting each one to good use. Each poem is an adventure, where she brings you along for the experience. Many of them took me back to similar experiences from my own life; others put me into completely new ones. A wonderful journey.
I first saw Sarah Kay on her very first Ted talk back in 2011 when she performed, If I Should Have a Daughter, and was completely blown away. She is one of the few poets to come along in a long while who makes poetry seem like an everyday conversation rather than its loftier brethren, who make you feel you have to be wearing your Sunday best to hear/read.I was worried that in reading Sarah instead of hearing her might lessen the experience of her poetry, but I could clearly hear her voice as I read through the poems in this volume. What makes Sarah so great is not only the accessibility of her work, but the turns of phrases that immediately conjure an image you wish you had thought of. And you know exactly what she means. She can make you laugh out loud, touch you deeply and make everything seem like it's going to be OK. This is a solid series of poems from a young and exciting poet and I can't wait to see where she heads next.
Sarah Kay's voice in "No Matter the Wreckage" comes out clear and strong on page as she does in a spoken word poetry. Her poems are not as didactic as many other spoken word poets and have a lyric touch. Due to the nature of the spoken word poetry and its relationship to performance, often subtly and emotional resonance is softened for the blunt impact. Kay's poetry maintains that lyric softness but with absolute clarity. They are graceful and emotional both performed and on the page.
From the wife: Finally something worth reading! Lately, I have been reading too many things with great reviews on Amazon and then they come and they are crap! This has rhythm, melody, structure and flow...It is gorgeous and I could relate to some of the stories even without ever having been to NY (most of what she writes is set there).
